Couple of Other Cool Things I Saw at AALL

By
After returning from the American Association of Law Libraries annual meeting in San Antonio last week, I wrote about having seen previews there of major changes in the works for Fastcase, Lexis Advance and Wolters Kluwer. I also wrote last week about WellSettled.com, which I learned about through conversations at AALL. But these were not the only products that caught my attention there. Here are a couple of others worth noting.

A Review of CosmoLex Time and Billing (Plus Exclusive News about New Features)

By
Earlier this year, I included the cloud-based billing and trust accounting platform CosmoLex on my list of the Top 10 Product Announcements at ABA Techshow. "This is a comprehensive time and billing system with everything you expect in such a system," I wrote then. Well, CosmoLex is about to get even more comprehensive, adding in practice-management features such as contact management, matter management and calendaring. Venerable LawBase Aims to Be ‘Best of Breed’ for Case Management

By
Recent years have brought an influx of new practice, case and matter management systems, primarily in the cloud. One such platform is LawBase, a case and matter management system first launched in 1981 by Synaptec Software Inc. Although the company is old, the software is not, says its CEO Philip Homburger. "We adapt and stay up with…

We Test WordRake’s Beta Version 2.0 on ‘McCutcheon’

By
When WordRake , the editing program for lawyers, was first released in 2012, I put it to the test against two of the most eloquent writers on the Supreme Court, Justices Antonin Scalia and Elena Kagan. If WordRake could improve on Scalia and Kagan, I reasoned, imagine what it could do for the rest of us. Now, WordRake is preparing to release version 2.0 of its software and it provided me with a beta version. This time, I decided to give Justices Scalia and…

Which Legal Sites Did Heartbleed Affect?

By
You've no doubt heard about Heartbleed, the security flaw that exposed personal information at many leading websites. The flaw was in OpenSSL, an open-source version of the SSL protocol that is used to encrypt transmissions between you and a website. The flaw created a vulnerability that could have exposed sensitive information. The vulnerability affected several leading Internet companies, including Google, Yahoo and Netflix. It made me wonder how many companies that cater to the legal profession were affected. I've collected a bit of information here. If you know of others, please let me know or add a comment below. If…
