CMS Germany has announced the firm wide adoption of ClauseBuddy, the AI assisted drafting and knowledge management platform, following a careful evaluation of solutions in a crowded legal tech market.

By selecting ClauseBuddy, CMS Germany aims to empower all of its lawyers with a combination of deterministic tools such as document automation and curated clause libraries alongside advanced AI functionality. This balanced approach was considered to provide the best value for money.

ClauseBuddy is kind of a Swiss army knife. It covers the best of the old world and also includes the new world of AI, blending them into something that is very neatly done,” said Frederik Leenen, Head of Legal Tech at CMS.

In addition to advanced AI drafting, CMS has leveraged ClauseBuddy’s knowledge management features, building curated clause libraries that place the firm’s know how at every lawyer’s fingertips. These can be combined with AI powered rewriting and drafting to maximise consistency and efficiency.

According to Katja Grabka, Senior Legal Tech Specialist at CMS, “ClauseBuddy is one of the tools that really covers knowledge management. You can draft from your own templates and libraries, but also rewrite and adapt them with AI so you never start from scratch.”

Ease of adoption was another decisive factor. ClauseBuddy integrates deeply into Microsoft Word, fitting seamlessly into lawyers’ existing workflows. Its design as a Word native solution makes it intuitive and accessible even to those who typically adopt technology more slowly.

“What is funny is that we see ClauseBuddy being popular even among the ones that usually do not adopt tech that early,” noted Leenen. “It feels much more like an augmentation of what lawyers have been doing than a replacement.”

The success of the roll out in Germany is already creating momentum across the wider CMS network, with other offices adopting or trialling ClauseBuddy. CMS also sees potential in extending use to in house teams and clients.
