Online Journalism Review reports that the popularity of Firefox and other alternatives to Internet Explorer is requiring greater scrutiny of Web site design. While IE’s preeminence meant that Web developers could focus their designing and testing on a single browser, no longer is this the case. As it happened, I came across this article just after viewing a law firm Web site that was strikingly incompatible with Firefox. With IE’s share of the browser market now below 90 percent for the first time in several years, one in every 10 visitors to this firm’s site is not seeing it as the firm intended. The conclusion is clear: Every firm that has a site should test it for compatibility with multiple browsers, and every firm that is developing a site should ensure it comports with generally accepted Web standards.
