For Illinois attorneys who are curious about trying artificial intelligence for contract review, now is their chance to do it for free.
The Illinois State Bar Association and the AI contract review platform SimpleDocs said today that they have entered into a partnership to give ISBA members free 30-day access to the SimpleDocs’ product SimpleAI and then a 25% discount on its subscription price.
SimpleAI is a product that enables lawyers to review, redline, draft, compare and benchmark contracts directly within Microsoft Word.
The ISBA and SimpleDocs say this is one of the first member benefit programs between a state bar association and a legal AI platform focused on making professional legal AI tools available at an affordable price to members across all sizes of law firms, including solos and smaller firms.
According to the ISBA, its Steering Committee on Artificial Intelligence vetted and selected the product for its usability, practical application, high standards of data privacy and security, and strict policy against training AI models on customer contract data.
“One of the main goals of the ISBA AI Steering Committee has been to identify high-quality AI tools for inclusion in the ISBA member discounts program,” Aaron Brooks, a technology lawyer and chair of the ISBA AI Steering Committee, said in a statement. “We look for providers that add real value to attorney workflows while demonstrating strong transparency around confidentiality and security.”
Brooks said he already uses SimpleAI in his own practice.
The ISBA said that its partnership with SimpleDocs reflects its broader commitment to helping attorneys navigate the rapidly evolving intersection of law and AI through practical education, responsible adoption guidance, and member-focused technology initiatives.
Preston Clark, cofounder and CEO of SimpleDocs, said that this partnership marks the beginning of the company’s broader effort to work with bar associations and legal organizations seeking to help legal professionals responsibly expand access to legal AI tools.
“Most attorneys are not looking for abstract AI experimentation — they want practical tools that help them review, draft and negotiate contracts faster and more consistently inside the systems they already use,” Clark said.
As part of this new partnership, ISBA and SimpleDocs will also collaborate on educational programming, including CLE content, product demonstrations, and practical guidance focused on responsible AI adoption within legal practice.
SimpleAI, launched in February 2025, is designed specifically for performing contract work directly within Microsoft Word, combining AI-powered drafting, review, redlining and playbook functionality with access to contract precedent and market-standard language. Specifically, lawyers can use it to:
- Review and redline agreements.
- Identify legal and business risks in contractual language.
- Compare language against preferred standards and playbooks.
- Draft and redline more quickly.
- Improve consistency across contracts.
The product is available immediately to ISBA members. They are entitled to a 30-day trial and then a 25% member discount on SimpleAI subscriptions.
ISBA members can find more information about this benefit on the bar’s website or at SimpleDocs.
